After taking a 6-0 lead on three-point field goals by Brittany Monpere and Brittany Pritchard, Penfield responded with 18 unanswered points the last seven minutes of the first quarter en route to a 67-35 non-league victory over Palmyra-Macedon on Saturday afternoon.
"They're a good tea and they took it hard to the basket," said Penfield coach Mark Vogt. "I like the fact that our kids kept their composure and tightened up the defense."
Laura McNamara canned a three to get the Lady Patriots on the scoreboard, and Margot Hetzke's three-point play knotted the count with 4:26 left in the period. The freshman tallied the final eight points of the stanza for the hosts as they established an18-6 margin. Hetzke finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals.
"Eleven of the rebounds were offensive," Vogt said. "At the end of the day they didn't have a big body who could stay with her. With her teammates hitting shots, they can't double-down as much and that really opens things up for Margot."
Penfield (2-0) led by as many as 18 points (33-15) in the first half before the Lady Raiders made a mild charge to cut the margin to 36-23 at halftime.
The Patriots began the third quarter with a 9-0 run to put the contest away.
"Our adjustment at halftime was to stay in front of them more and bring help earlier," Vogt said. "Even though we were up, we thought they had kind of taken the momentum and we really want to get that back in the third quarter. We outscored them 18-2 in the period, and that's pretty much the game."
Wilkins netted 12 points as Michelle Nesselbush came off the bench and contributed 13 points and six rebounds. Lucy Covley also came off the bench and added eight rebounds and four points for Penfield.
Olivia Kachel and Pritchard paced Pal-Mac (2-2) with nine points apiece. Monpere chipped in seven as Leah May added five. Brittany Szachta scored three and Dana Nau had two.
"They're a better team than it looked today," said Vogt of the Raiders. "We just played well."
