Penfield holds off Rush in OT to take AAA Title!!!!
3/5/2009
GATES - Lacey Coppage's driving layup with 13 seconds left in overtime lifted top-seeded Penfield to a 48-47 win over five-time defending champion Rush-Henrietta in a thriller for the Section V Class AAA girls basketball championship tonight at Gates Chili High School.

The title is the first for the Patriots (22-1) in the 36-year history of the Section V Tournament. They will play Canandaigua in Monday's 7 p.m. Class AA state tournament qualifier at Gates.

No. 3 R-H, which had won three straight state titles, finished 14-9.

Coppage led Penfield with 18 points. LaDonya Rolle led R-H with 19.

Sarah Tranelli's baseline jump shot with 37 seconds left gave Penfield a 42-40 lead late in regulation, but Rolle's turnaround bank shot with 9.3 seconds left forced OT.

The Patriots had two shots to win in the final seconds, but Coppage's runner down the lane was a bit strong and Colleen Coon couldn't convert the putback.

In OT, Gabby D'Ercole's breakaway layup with 1:10 to go off a strong Coon rebound put Penfield ahead 46-44, but Rolle muscled in a putback as she was fouled and made the free throw to give R-H the lead, 47-46, with 31 seconds left.

Coppage, who carried the Patriots all night, then drove the right lane against Rolle and banked in a runner with 13 seconds left, giving Penfield the edge, 48-47.

The Monroe County Division I rivals met twice during the regular season and Penfield won 55-28 on Jan. 13 and 44-40 on Feb. 10 to end R-H's reign as league champions.

R-H trailed most of the game, but used a 15-3 advantage in the third quarter to take a 34-33 lead into the fourth.

Coppage scored eight straight points for Penfield, tying it twice in the fourth quarter at 36 on a driving bank shot, then a scoop layup after splitting two defenders to knot it at 38 with 3:18 remaining.

R-H had lost Bernadette Davis with four minutes left when the senior forward fouled out, and Penfield freshman guard Megan Malloy fouled out with 2:39 to go.
